Denece Taylor-Begay

I am a member of Kha Po Owinge (Santa Clara Pueblo) and also of Ute and Dine descent. I am so grateful to be creating with my family. I enjoy making items for my community. I was taught to bead by my late Aunt Betty LaRose and I learned to sew by watching my mom Diana Taylor. My artwork honors those who came before me. Creating wearable art has been a way of healing: a channel to express myself in a place where at times growing up I felt invisible. I am grateful to be able to do it collaboratively with my family is one of the most important aspects of my art. My granddaughter creates her own art with me and that is where it comes full circle. I enjoy making contemporary art that also honors where I come from and my experiences. I like to create contemporary clothing while using designs from my family.

Creative Process

I am inspired by nature, especially the river. I am also very inspired by movement. Dancing is a really important part of my life . My designs represent fluidity.
